NB:- This inscription was to be found on a grey slab in the South Aisle ( x ref No 13) The above brass
was discovered by a previous Vicar, Rev. Carlton Green and placed in situ. For translation see below.
" Pray for the soul of John Fage of the Lord of Chalvestone (Chawston) who died on
Saturday before the feast of the birth of St. John the Baptist in the year of our Lord
one thousand and four hundred - May the Lord look upon his soul. Amen."
NB:- By this well established time into the Christian faith, Sabbath would have been Sunday,
Feast day of St. John the Baptist = June 24th & Senioris could be The Elder.

"Near here lies JACOB METCALFE of ROXTON HOUSE, Arms bearer of this Parish who died 1st June 1793 aged 51.
With his wife Susanna he had one son Charles Jacob and four daughters Sophia,
Francesca, Susanna and Catharine.
This monument was placed here above his remains by his most faithful wife in this everlasting testimony to their love and the closeness of their union."

"Sacred to the memory of Susanna Metcalfe, widow of Jacob Metcalfe, who died 12 Sept 1835 at the age of 84.
This marble was placed here by her son Charles Jacob Metcalfe in loving and reverend memory."

Inscription in white under a Shield with 2 per fess invected with 2 crescents above & 1 below the 'wavy line". The crescent denotes Second son

who was Vicar of this Parish
and Schoolmaster in this town
about 30 years
he died Avst 29 J720
As also his only Son Mr. John REWSE
Aged 26 years
he died April J7. J72J
NB: The "1" 's in the above inscription are fashioned as a "J" as are other examples in here and outside on H/S's
From "Bedfordshire Churches" "Rev. Rewse tore pages out of the registers from 1684 - because of
misspellings by the keeper of the register" Perhaps someone got their own back by mis-
spelling his wife's name wrongly on her memorial - see No 9 below.

who died July 18 1714
NB: The small "d" 's, "rs", "r"'s, &. "ms" in the 2 above inscriptions should be at the top of their adjacent words; also note the mis-spelling of the surname in No 7 above.
The name REWSE is correctly spelt on the list of clergy on the South wall near the font.

(W/M p.58 No 91) who could possibly be the child of the above.

Epitaph under coat of arms comprising - Saltire on LH side of shield and
Chevron on RH side of shield with shield surrounded by leaf sprays.
Two indecipherable marks are above the chevron within the shield.

The following letters or pairs of letters should be raised to be level with the top of the previous
letter "RS", "R", "M", "th" and the "e" to be above the "y". The symbol "f" is used in the
spelling of "less" and "Herselfe" in the quotation.

This is a tablet inset in the floor at the side of the small / Lady altar in the South Aisle
which has been "repaired" with cement and is only partly legible.
The grave is believed to be Susan Child, daughter of Robert and Dinah Child.
From parish records Susan was baptised 25th December 1708 and buried on 8th April 1734.
Robert Child is buried in No:11.
